The city of Amsterdam justly enjoys great fame as the proud owner of one of the most important historical centres in the world. Its concentric canals dominate the distinctive cityscape, many lined with former residences of merchants and burghers. Amsterdam is best seen by canal, by tram and on foot. For those art enthusiasts or students there are the three world-ranking galleries: the Rijksmuseum (housing many works by the likes of Rembrandt and Vermeer); the Van Gogh museum (with many of his later masterpieces); and the Stedelijk museum (stunning modern art).
